| The Diaries of Yossef Nachmany | | Director: Dalia Karpel, Producer: Marek Rozenbaum
The history of the establishment of the State of Israel is told differently by the two nations fighting over the same land. Revealing the diaries of Yossef Nachmani, a mainstream Zionist and director of the then Jewish National Fund Office in the Galilee during the 1930s and 40s, this history, albeit by a Jewish clerk is portrayed in a way which differs from the Zionist ethos commonly acknowledged by the State of Israel. 99 min. German, Italian, French, with English subtitles. Germany, 2009.
Veit Harlan was, along with Leni Riefenstahl, Nazi Germany’s most successful film director, remembered today for his infamous Jud Süß. Harlan was a master of national kitsch, exulting in melodrama and death, but he was also an extraordinary artist who ended up serving the Nazi propaganda machine. This documentary film, the first account of his life and career, draws on his extensive film catalogue, including previously unreleased materials from the Harlan family’s private archive.
