She’s In The Army Now

Director: Tsipi Brand

6 X 30 Minutes, Hebrew, English subtitles, Colour, 2001

This compelling documentary series follows the trials and tribulations of six young women during Basic Training at an Israeli military camp. Through their unique perspective the process of adjustment to the harsh new military environment unfolds. This film also recounts the social, personal and at times even sexual relationships that develop between the girls.

Tal, the base’s transsexual sport instructor, “a man trapped in a woman’s body,” faces the conservative framework with relative success and even develops a relationship with Ravit, a lesbian trainee. Sivan, obliged against her will to do the compulsory service learns to deal with the system by force. Lior the “pacifisct,” challenges the rules in a more sophisticated way. Introverted Oz, recently orphaned, struggles to keep her secret and highly motivated Lena, who we discover immigrated alone from the Ukraine, is not Jewish and is considering conversion.
